Diary post 7/25/10: Adam Lambert rocked my world in San Francisco

Dear Diary,

SQUEEEEE! I just saw Adam Lambert in concert this past Friday in San Francisco and it was sooooo killllllah!! Seriously, I felt all twinkle toed as I left the building – totally walking on cloud nine! I’ll admit it, I did drink a hearty amount of booze that night and there’s a good chance my memory will fade quickly. So for posterity, I’m sharing the details of my night here.

I had a fun little group of peeps in toe, which included fellow Pop Culture Junkie members, Kelly and Cristina a.k.a. “bulletsucker” (our first meet up!), and a coworker who liked Adam from “American Idol”, but hadn’t really followed his career since. (Naturally, I was curious what she was going to think of Adam’s more “flamboyant” side now that he’s free of the AI confines!)

We ate at a restaurant directly across from the historic Warfield Theater in the city, and we enjoyed the sport of people watching as the line filled in. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s like people watching at a Lady Gaga concert, but there were def some real fashion statements going on here. My favorite was this 70-year old grandma that had glitter caked onto her cheeks like a football player uses eye black to block the sun in games. It was so adorable! (Ok and a little funny!)

Unlike most concerts, this one started right on time – if not a little early! By 8:02 Alison Iraheta (3rd runner up on AI season 8) was already rocking out on stage. She didn’t stay on stage for long though. It was as if her songs were on fast forward. Then, Michael Jackson’s young female protégé, Orianthi, came out and performed a lengthier set, including her current radio hit “According To You”. But most of the time Kelly and I were running back and forth from the bar lining up beers under our chairs. Hey, who wants to make a beer run during the actual concert?

We paid $100 for lower balcony seats and they weren’t bad, considering this is a smaller venue. But they weren’t great either. Cristina, who purchased a single General Admission ticket the day of the concert for $11 (I know, right?) texted me to come down for a ‘rita. After I made an alcohol induced purchase of a $40 t-shirt and a $10 poster, which will never touch a wall in my house, we snuck in to GA with her to see the view. And WTF, GA was WAY better! I had been so afraid to get stuck in a sweaty Glambert sandwich that I overlooked how close I’d actually be to The Glam One. So we stayed put! In fact, I had a great spot because I stood on a step just above the sunken GA pit so I was a head taller than everyone else. Security got sick of taping my shoulder to clear the stairs and finally just left me alone!

About two hours later, Adam appeared onstage, mad-hatter style. He sang one of my fave bonus track songs “Voodoo” and slinked around stage with a cane. After that he surprised me and performed Idol favorite “Ring of Fire”. Thankfully, by the third song the top hat came off exposing his glittery, perfectly coifed black hair, which had him totally looking like Elvis circa 1962’s film “Girls Girls Girls” (and famous “Return to Sender” performance, watch here). I was happy to see that the ridiculous side head shaving stunt he pulled last month had grown in. He looked really fit too! Somebody’s been doing dumb bell curls! Favorite performances of the night had to be “Fever”, “Aftermath”, “Sure Fire Winners”, and “If I Had You”. I just have to say, when Adam sings “Aftermath”; his falsetto voice is so beautiful, that if a singing voice alone were ever to elicit genuine tears of appreciation, this would be one of those songs. And it nearly does for me!

Adam was full of energy on that stage, all smiles, and he was sending out loads of positive vibes to the crowed. You know how some people just have an infectiously fun personality and whenever you’re around them, you feel a little lighter on your feet? Well that’s exactly how Adam is. He’s fun. He’s playful. And best of all, he’s super positive. These attributes could help describe the whimsical feeling one has while skipping out of the theater after just seeing Adam perform.

Well of course, it’s more than just a nice personality. He’s definitely got that certain “je na se qua” that makes him undeniably appealing. My coworker had different seats than us, so when the concert was over she shared her thoughts on the show. Being a big Prince fan, she felt there were some definite similarities between the whole mix of masculine and feminine qualities that both Adam and Prince display. Looking contemplative, she searched for the right word to describe Adam. Finally she says; “He’s just . . . SEXY.” Oh how I love to bring people to my side!

If I could describe Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation concert in three words it would be: fun, SEXY, and happy. Adam just makes me happy, as dorky as that sounds! He’s infectious and perhaps that’s why people are so addicted to him. And now I understand why all those nutty peeps are going to see him several times throughout his tour. They’re addicted to the love, the happiness – the sexy!

I didn’t go to night two in San Francisco tonight. I wanted to, but the husband was complaining that he wanted to spend time with me and stuff, so I had to be a good wife and sit that second show out. I felt as if I was missing a party that had my name written all over it. But hey, I’ll always have that one epic summer night with Adam in San Francisco. And thanks to this diary entry, I’ll never forget it!

Courtney J

P.S. I got some great vids from the night! Sorry for the ones where it’s shaky or it cuts short – my arms got tired! The best are “Sure Fire Winners”, “If I Had You”, and “Aftermath”!

adam's time on stage was def too short, but i'm glad he had both alison & orianthi play. i felt like watching him for an hour was just a teaser. i knew i would be addicted to his live presence, and now all i want is more live adam! i can only imagine what it must have been like for the audience of ai-- each week, i was on pins & needles to see him on tv, but it must have been a hundred times more exciting actually being in the audience! he is sex on wheels, and i'm thumbing a ride on the side of 101.

Yes, if I had anything bad to say about the show it would be that Adam's part was too short. I would've liked to see him perform the length of a Lady Gaga or Justin Timberlake concert (about 2 hours). But he's a new artist and it's his first headlining tour, so his management probably didn't want to kill him on his first tour!

This is my 3rd time seeing Adam live and each time I'm reminded of how euphoric I feel when it's over. I want to make it a point to see more of his live shows, even if that means making a weekend out of it and traveling somewhere! NYC, here we come!

I know, despite my shaky arms and vids that cut short, I was surprised at the quality of some of these vids! BUUUUT, but focusing on recording and keeping steady, I was actually missing a good deal of the live show in front of me. Another reason I should've gone a second time!

I did send it to Adam's Twitter when I tweeted it both times today! Plus, it was re-tweeted a handful of times by others, so that's good. But I doubt he reads any blog links sent to him. But I don't know, he seems to re-tweet other people's vids and pics on occassion, so you never know! :)

Thanks for the vids, Courtney. I have tickets to his show next week and I've been trying to sell them because I wasn't sure I wanted to go (don't ask why), but they haven't sold and now I'm glad because I'm really looking forward to going. I LOVE the acoustic versions of Aftermath and WWFM as they show off how amazing his voice really is. Sometimes it gets lost in all the music and I needed the reminder of why I fell in love with him. So thanks!

You're welcome glittergal! If your love for Adam has been waning over time, perhaps due to a lack of any new stuff (such as music videos or TV appearances), you'll be reinvigorated after seeing him live! I'm serious when I say that I felt all euphoric afterward. Every one was telling me the show is nothing but "love, love, love' and I was wondering what tree everyone was hugging! It's hard to explain why, but it's so true! Adam just exudes positive energey and it's like a drug that you just want more and more of! I hope you have fun girl! Please come back here and share your thoughts - or add your own blog post on your experience! :)
